The vintage in Calonge and Sant Antonio

In September, Calonge and Sant Antoni becomes the heart of the harvest, a time that is not only key for wine production but also a living example of resilience and winemaking passion.

The importance of the land
As you well know, Calonge is known for its long winemaking tradition, which dates back to medieval times. During the 19th century, phylloxera devastated vineyards, but local winemakers showed great resilience, replanting the vineyards with more adapted varieties. In the 1980s, at a time when viticulture was in decline, a group of winemakers decided to revive this tradition, betting on quality and the diversification of grape varieties.
The terroir of Calonge is one of the main assets of its wines. The vineyards are located on soils of sauló, with a particular microclimate thanks to the proximity of the sea and the protection of the mountains. This combination allows the production of grapes with balanced acidity and great aromatic expressiveness. Local winemakers have known how to take advantage of these conditions to create unique wines that reflect the uniqueness of the Empordà landscape.

Native varieties and innovation
Both native and international varieties are cultivated here. Among the native ones, garnacha and samsó (carinyena) stand out, which provide structure and character to the wines. As for the foreign varieties, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, and chardonnay have been introduced, adapting well to the terroir and complementing the local varieties, enriching the diversity of the wines produced.
The winemakers of Calonge consider themselves guardians of an ancient tradition that they have managed to keep alive despite the adversities. Their wines are an expression of resilience and passion for the land, and they have gained recognition both at home and abroad.

Winemakers of resistance and tradition
Commitment to quality and respect for the environment are key values in the winemaking production of this area, making Calonge wines a reference for Catalan wine. These professionals, committed to the land, have preserved ancient vineyards and adapted to new times without losing the essence that makes the wine of this region unique.
The wines of Calonge are the result of intense work and a deep connection with nature. They are wines that express the uniqueness of the territory, with vines that have resisted diseases and extreme weather phenomena. Each bottle is a tribute to the land, the climate, and the tireless work of our winemakers.

The Harvest: a moment of celebration
The harvest is much more than the grape harvest; it is a celebration that involves the whole community. It is the moment when the fruits of an entire year’s work are collected, and it is done with care to ensure that each grape contributes its maximum potential to the wine that will be produced.
During this period, our municipality hosts guided visits to the vineyards and wineries, where you can get a close-up view of this special process. In addition, wine tastings and open-door days offer a unique opportunity to better understand the richness and diversity of our wines.
