Rituals and traditions of the St. John's Eve

The legend says...


...that Saint John the Baptist was born on this magical night around 12 midnight, half a year later and at the same time as Jesus Christ. When he was born, his father lit huge bonfires everywhere to express his immense joy. Hence, that this tradition spread around the fire.

Rituals around water...


Some of the most popular rituals, with water as protagonist are:

-Bathing in the sea or in a gorge at the stroke of midnight. This practice was believed to preserve the health of the body and the good condition of the skin.

-Rolling over the dew of St John's morning. It was considered beneficial because it prevented aging.



Rituals around the fire...


As for the Night of Fire, it is a widespread belief that the flames drive away and scare away imaginary beings who only camp on this night. Hence the name Witches' Night, believing that this night is cursed.

Throughout the Catalan territory it is a night of spells, firecrackers, water baths, ancestral remedies, ritual dances, plants and remedies.
